Thomas was born in 1865 in Urpeth Colliery, Durham.  Thomas' father was William Marshall and his mother was Ann Henderson.  His paternal grandmother was Ann Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Henderson and Mary Bulmer. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ralph, William, Joseph, Mary A, Jane and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
