Martha was born in 1761 in Dudley.  Martha's father was Edward Hipkiss and her mother was Mary Price.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Hipkiss and Hannah Lowe. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Edward, Benjamin, Joseph, Hannah, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
