Benjamin was born in 1769 in Dudley.  Benjamin's father was Edward Hipkiss and his mother was Mary Price.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hipkiss and Hannah Lowe. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, John, Edward, Joseph, Hannah, Martha, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
