Mary Jane was born in 1871 in Newcastle Upon Tyne.  Mary Jane's father was George Henderson and her mother was Hannah Alderson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Henderson and Mary Bulmer; her maternal grandparents were Jonathan Alderson and Jane. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas A, William, Alice A, Elizabeth A and Annie.  She was the oldest of the six children.
