John was born on April 23rd, 1849 in Tippah, Mississippi, USA. John's father was Brightwell Rather Elder and his mother was Lucinda Elviney Gammel. His maternal grandparents were Stephen Pate Gammel and Mary Ann Runnels. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William L B, Columbus McNeer, William Harrison Hendricks, James Buchanan, Robert Dixie, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, Rosa Alva and Lula Ann. He is the third oldest of the ten children.-
