Mary E was born in 1844. Mary E's father is Samuel William Byrd and her mother is Phoebe Laymance. Her paternal grandparents were William Byrd and Hannah Thornton. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William H, James P, Issac, Margaret J, Sarah, Mahala J and Hannah. She is the second oldest of the nine children.
