John was born on November 8th, 1896 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.1   John's father was Thomas Thornton and his mother was Edith Coulton.  His paternal grandparents were John Thornton and Mary Mitchell; his maternal grandparents were Leach Coulton and Margaret Ann Lund.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named Arthur, Willie H, Annie E, Alice, Edna and Frank.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 70 on November 22nd, 1966 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.
