Helen was born in 1837 in Cottingley, Yorkshire, England.1   Helen's father was Richard Thornton and her mother was Elizabeth (Thornton).  She had four brothers and five sisters, named Henry, George, Hastwell W, Richard, Martha Jane, Mary, Anna E, Catherine and Octavia.  She was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
