Alfred was born in February 1901.  Alfred's father was Fred Thornton and his mother was Lily Greenwood.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Thornton and Alice Boothman.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Kenneth, Frederick and Alice.  He was the oldest of the four children.
