John was born in 1834 in Arncliffe, Yorkshire, England.1   John's father was Unknown Summers and his mother was Elizabeth (Summers).  He had a brother and a sister, named William and Dorothy.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He had a half-sister named Sarah Ellen.
