Samuel was born in 1790 in Beeston, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.1   Samuel's father was Samuel Pettyt and his mother was Anne (Nancy) Benson.  His paternal grandmother was Dinah Pettyt.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, John, Dinah, Mary Anne and Eliza.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 69 in 1859 in Burley Lodge, Burley, Headingley, Yorkshire, England.
