William Petty

William was born in 1825 in Thornthwaite, Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire, England.¹ William's father was Thomas Pettyt and his mother was Sarah (Petty). His paternal grandparents were Thomas Pettyt and Sarah Metcalfe. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, George, Sarah, Ann and Isabella. He was the oldest of the six children.
