Lister Cockshott was born in 1850 in Thorpe, Burnsall, Yorkshire, England.1   Lister Cockshott's father was Thomas Petty and his mother was Hannah Cockshott.  He had a brother and two sisters, named Titus, Sarah Ann and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
