Ellison was born in September 1874 in Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, England.1   Ellison's father was Thomas Petty and his mother was Dorothy M Ellison.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Petty and Jane (Petty).  He had three brothers and a sister, named Richard, Walter S, Tom and Mary A.  He was the oldest of the five children.
