Edward Lionel was born in March 1873 in Crosshills, Yorkshire, England.1   Edward Lionel's father was Charles Petty and his mother was Mary Webster.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Petty and Margaret (Petty).  He had six brothers named Francis William, Charles H, Richard George, Walter Webster, Allan Isaac and Joshua Somerset.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
