Arthur Sidney was born in 1869 in Otley, Yorkshire, England.1   Arthur Sidney's father was James Petty and his mother was Nancy Newell.  His paternal grandparents were George Petty and Hannah Brewer.  He had two brothers and six sisters, named Matthew William, George H, Mary Hannah, Annie Priscilla, Alice Ann, Sarah L., Eliza and Julia.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
