Newis was born in December 1882 in Gilling West, Yorkshire, England.  Newis' father was Newis Benson and his mother was Elizabeth Plummer.  His paternal grandparents were Arthur Benson and Ann Newiss.  He had a brother and two sisters, named Harry, Annie and Lilly.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He had two half-sisters named Jane Ann and Henrietta.
