Mary was born in 1842 in Aldfield.  Mary's father was Arthur Benson and her mother was Ann Newis.  Her maternal grandfather was James Newis.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Newis, Arthur, Ann N and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the five children.
