Joan's father was Pau Mercader Aloma and his mother was Antònia Vadell Soler.  His paternal grandparents were Josep Mercader Yyyy and Maria Aloma Yyyy; his maternal grandparents were Bartolomé Vadell Yyyy and Marina Soler Yyyy. He had a brother and five sisters, named Gregorio, Maria, Lluïsa, Antònia, Maria and Marina.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
