His maternal grandparents were Friedrich Jon “Fred” Sprecher and Louise “Christine” Gruning (Sprecher) Grunning. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Lou, Osker, Reinhold, Arthur, Benjamin, Louise, Friedricka, Kathrina and Paulina. He was the oldest of the ten children.
