Bertha's father was Gottlieb Reinhold Sprecher and her mother was Karolina Hille (Sprecher). Her paternal grandparents were Friedrich Jon “Fred” Sprecher and Louise “Christine” Gruning (Sprecher) Grunning. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Daniel, Admont, Edward, Fredrich, Friedricka, Christina, Magdalina and Salome. She was the youngest of the ten children. She had a half-brother named Emanuel.
