James was born in 1821 in Largs.  James' father was Hugh Ewing (Euing) and his mother was Agnes Orr.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Ewing (Euing) and Jean How?; his maternal grandparents were William Orr and Margaret Kerr. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Hugh, Thomas, Ellen, Agnes, Margaret and Helen.
