Hugh was born on October 6th, 1829 in Largs and his baptism took place there on November 1st, 1829.  Hugh's father was Hugh Ewing (Euing) and his mother was Agnes Orr.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Ewing (Euing) and Jean How?; his maternal grandparents were William Orr and Margaret Kerr. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, Thomas, Ellen, Agnes, Margaret and Helen.
