James was born on February 6th, 1806 in Dreghorn and his baptism took place there on February 16th, 1806.  James' father was Robert Dunlop and his mother was Ann Galt.  His maternal grandparents were Gabriel Galt and Jean Love. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Gabriel, Robert, John, Robert, Andrew, Allan, Jean, Margaret and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.  He died from a stroke at the age of 70 on August 18th, 1876 in Strone Farm.
