Leonardo was born in Valdezate (Burgos).  Leonardo's father was Román Martínez (González) and his mother was Petra González (De Frutos).  He was the youngest of six children.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Elías, Adolfo, Pablo, Felipa and Tomasa.  He died in 2003.
