Jose María's father was Pablo Martínez (González) and his mother was Aurelia Nieto.  His paternal grandparents were Román Martínez (González) and Petra González (De Frutos).  He is the youngest of six children.  He has two brothers and three sisters, named Emiliano, Atilano, Antonia, Ana María and Adela.
