James was born in 1868 in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.  James' father was Andrew McDonald and his mother was Leslie Fraser.  His paternal grandfather was James McDonald and his paternal grandmother is <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Fraser and Martha Cooper.  He had six brothers and six sisters, named Andrew, William, Charles, Alexander, George, Gordon, Christina, Mattie, Lizzie, Leslie, Ruby and Maggie.
