Ellen, known as Nelly, was born about 1876 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.  Nelly's father was Richard Jones and her mother was Ellen Webb.  She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Arthur, Albert, Emma, Edith and Elsie.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
