John was born about 1856 in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.  John's father was James Davidson and his mother was Margaret Imlay.  His maternal grandparents were John Imlay and Ann MacGregor.  He had a brother and four sisters, named James, Jane, Margaret, Ann and Helen.
