John was born on November 15th, 1832.  John's father was Charles Webster and his mother was Eleanor Penelope Ryder.  His paternal grandparents were Benoni Webster and Sally Metcalfe; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Ryder and Betsey Chase. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Charles Jr., Aaron, Samuel, Lovina and Sophronia.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
