Sophia's father was Maximilian I Joseph King of Bavaria and her mother was Caroline of Baden.  Her paternal grandparents were Frederick Michael and Maria Francisca Sulzbach. She had four sisters named Maria, Elizabeth, Ludovica and Amelia of Bavaria. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Charles, Louis I Augustus King of Bavaria, Augusta and Caroline.
