Augusta's father was Maximilian I Joseph King of Bavaria and her mother was Withelmine of Damstadt.  Her paternal grandparents were Frederick Michael and Maria Francisca Sulzbach. She had two brothers and a sister, named Charles, Louis I Augustus King of Bavaria and Caroline. She had five half-sisters named Maria, Elizabeth, Sophia, Ludovica and Amelia of Bavaria.
