Dorthea was born in 1528.  Dorthea's father was Frederick I King of Denmark and Norway and her mother was Sophia of Vorpommem.  Her paternal grandparents were Christen I King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden and Dorthea of Bradenburg. She had three brothers and a sister, named John Duke of Schlesvig-Holstein, Adolf Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, Frederick Bishop of Hildeshiem-Schlesvig and Isabella.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Christen III King of Denmark and Norway and Dorthea.  She died at the age of 47 in 1575.
