Adolf Duke of Holstein-Gottorp was born in 1526.  Adolf Duke of Holstein-Gottorp's father was Frederick I King of Denmark and Norway and his mother was Sophia of Vorpommem.  His paternal grandparents were Christen I King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden and Dorthea of Bradenburg. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John Duke of Schlesvig-Holstein, Frederick Bishop of Hildeshiem-Schlesvig, Isabella and Dorthea.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Christen III King of Denmark and Norway and Dorthea.  He died at the age of 60 in 1586.
