Nancy was born in 1839.  Nancy's father was Thomas Alexander Porch and her mother was Jane Elizabeth Ragland Witherspoon. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Stiles, John, John, Elizabeth, Celia, Sarah and Ella.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She had five half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Henry, William, Alexander, James, Julius, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Frances, Susan, Sarah, Pleasant and Mary.  She died at the age of 47 in 1886.
