Earl's father was William Henry Shinaut and his mother was Susan Alice Hix. His paternal grandparents were Rueben Shinaut and Eleanor Franklin; his maternal grandparents were Hix and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, David, Joseph, Estella, Mary and Ethel. He died at the age of 22 on May 28th, 1908 in Fairfax, Atchison County, Missouri.
