Thomas was born about 1776 in West Chillisquaque, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA. Thomas' father was Maj. James McMahan and his mother was Mary Murray. His paternal grandparents were John McMahan and Margaret Murray; his maternal grandparents were James Murray and Janet "Jennet" Armit. He had three brothers and a sister, named Samuel, John, James and Jane. He died about 1822 in Albany County, New York, USA.-
