Magdalena was born on October 14th, 1856.  Magdalena's father was Francois Petrus van Blerk and her mother was Cornelia Barendina Johanna Vorster.  Her paternal grandfather was Petrus Jacobus van Blerk and her paternal grandmother is Maria Susanna Joubert. She had eight brothers and four sisters, named Piet, Berend, Oupa Hendrik, Carel, Jan, Frank, J, Izak , Elizabeth, S, Unknown and Anna.  She was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children.
