Richard was born on March 13th, 1861 in Pennsylvania.¹

Richard's father was Mr Mayes and his mother was Mrs Sarah J. His maternal grandparents were Mr and Mrs. He had three brothers and a sister, named Hasson, Thomas, John and Ella. He was the fourth oldest of the five known children. He died at the age of 77 in 1938 in Pennsylvania.¹

  Found in the 1910 US Census taken at Eldred, McKean County, PA and was living with his wife Eliza. Last name was spelled as "Mays" in this census.
  
  Family history (Source: Sara Lorraine Holmes) records that Richard loved baseball both as a player and a fan. He didn't make the major leagues due to a broken hand the year he was supposed to try out as a first baseman with the Pittsburgh club. In his city league baseball days he played with Hall of famer Rube Waddell, Frank Chance and Schreck.
  
  Fred Berry, Sarah Lorraine Holme's husband, once noted that Richard Mayes had hands so large that you could lose your hand in his when you shook hands.
