Helen Ridout was born on August 13th, 1897.  Helen Ridout's father was William Jarvis Wharin and her mother was Amelia Phillips.  Her paternal grandparents were William Wharin and Mary June Dunn; her maternal grandfather was Frederick E Phillips and her maternal grandmother is Amelia Connors. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William Phillips, John Frederick, Amelia Mary and Jean Frances.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
