Richard was born in 1785 in Tenterden, Kent, England and his baptism took place on March 13th, 1785.  Richard's father was Thomas Reader and his mother was Sarah Merralls. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Thomas, Judith, Mary, June, Catherine, Hannah, Philly and Harriett.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
