William was born on January 1st, 1799.  William's father was William M. Moody and his mother was Mary (Polly) Moody.  His paternal grandparents were William Moody and Rachel Moody. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Asby, Samuel, Joseph, John, Jane, Converse and Martha J..  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
