John was born on October 11th, 1811.  John's father was William M. Moody and his mother was Mary (Polly) Moody.  His paternal grandparents were William Moody and Rachel Moody. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, William, Asby, Samuel, Joseph, Jane, Converse and Martha J..  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
