Samuel was born in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.  Samuel's father is Increase Mather and his mother is Mariah Mather.  His paternal grandfather was Richard Mather and his paternal grandmother is Catherine Mather; his maternal grandparents are John Cotton and Sarah Hawkredd. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Cotton, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Maria, Sarah, Katherine, Jerusha, Hannah and Abigail.  He died in Whitney, Oxfordshire, England.
