Mendel was born on September 9th, 1852 in Golub-Dobrzyn, Poland.1   Mendel's father was Gerszon Pieniek and his mother was Ita Bayla (Buna?).  His paternal grandparents were Eliasz Pieniek and Ryfka. He had three brothers named Josek, Tojwie and Eliasz.  He was the oldest of the four children.
