Zelman was born in 1841 in Hrubieszow, Lublin, Poland.1   Zelman's father was Moszko Hersz Pieniak and his mother was Rayzla Trost.  His paternal grandparents were Libisz Peniak and Eta. He had two brothers named Jankiel and Icko.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Mendel.
