Mendel was born in 1856 in Hrubieszow, Lublin, Poland.1   Mendel's father was Moszko Hersz Pieniak and his mother was Ruchla Laia.  His paternal grandparents were Libisz Peniak and Eta. He had three half-brothers named Zelman, Jankiel and Icko.
