Robert was born on September 13th, 1814 in Parliament Court Bethnal Green and his christening took place on May 17th, 1815 at St Matthews Bethnal Green conducted by the vicar.1   Robert's father was Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman  and his mother was Mary Foster.  His paternal grandparents were John Spillman and Mary Carter; his maternal grandparents were Richard Forster (Rope Maker) and Jane. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Henry, John, William, Samuel, James, James, Mary and Mary.  He was the youngest of the nine known children.  He died due to a medical problem, Castro enteritis & Asthemia, at the age of 72 on August 15th, 1887 in Mile End Infirmary.  The funeral took place in Mile End Old town.  He was buried on August 20th, 1887.2
