James was born on May 4th, 1809 in Kings Arms Gardens Bethnal Green and his christening took place on August 20th, 1809 at St Matthews Bethnal Green conducted by the vicar.1 2   James' father was Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman  and his mother was Mary Foster.  His paternal grandparents were John Spillman and Mary Carter; his maternal grandparents were Richard Forster (Rope Maker) and Jane. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Henry, John, William, Samuel, James, Robert, Mary and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the nine known children.  He died due to a medical problem, Phthiois Fulmonatis, at the age of 69 on June 16th, 1878 at 5 Railway Place York Rd Limehouse.3 




James' family

James and Maria were married in a religious ceremony on March 28th, 1833 at St Leonards Shoreditch Middlesex.  They had three sons and three daughters, named James, William, David, Maria, Ann and Eliza.
