Walter was born in March 1851 in Swan Yard Bocking. Walter's father was Thomas Hunnable (B Braintree Silk Weaver) and his mother was Jane Amos (b Coggeshall Silk Weaver).  His maternal grandparents were William Amos (b Coggeshall Silk Weaver) and Martha York (B Gt Cornard Suffolk D Martin Yard Braintree). He had a brother and four sisters, named George, Emily, Sarah, Emma and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the six children.
